British people and their pets; we just love them – sometimes more than humans!
A quick online search of ‘pet Christmas presents’ reveals that some of us spend a lot more thought (and money) on our than we do on some of our nearest and dearest at Christmas. From personalised Christmas boxes and reindeer antler hats for dogs, through to fleece-lined hamster hammocks and sunflower mirrors for parrots, retailers across the board have realised that as valued members of our family, our pets are increasingly part of our festive gifting.
Research by Cox and Cox in 2019, found that UK pet owners spent an average of £25 per animal on Christmas treats and gifts. Reptiles were the least likely to find something under the tree (only 12% get a treat) while 82% of dogs receive a present.
Although this Christmas will be unlike any other, with spending overall expected to be squeezed, it’s still thought that UK pet owners will spend in the region of £1 billion on gifts for their furry and feathered friends.
Pet gift preferences
According to a survey by Direct Line Pet Insurance, food and treats are the most popular presents from ‘Santa Paws’ to pets, with over two fifths (45%) of owners saying it’s their preferred gift choice, followed closely by toys (43%). More than a quarter of owners celebrating Christmas prepare a pet stocking for Christmas morning and around eleven per cent share the build-up to Christmas by getting their pets a dog, cat, or horse-specific advent calendar.
